12.3. Check of the helmsman management without the hydraulic amplifier
THE GENERAL DATA

Establish forward wheels for rectilinear movement, softly turn a steering wheel to the left and to the right before occurrence of notable resistance and measure люфт steering transfer.
Люфт measure on external diameter of a steering wheel. Люфт a steering wheel should not exceed 30 mm.

If люфт exceeds admissible value, means universal hinges of an intermediate shaft of a steering column, spherical hinges of tips of steering draughts are worn out or preliminary loading of steering transfer is incorrectly adjusted.

For check люфта connections of a steering column undertake a hand connection and turn a steering wheel every which way. Any люфт between steering shaft, intermediate shaft and shaft of a gear wheel of steering transfer will be felt.

Check up connecting draughts, lifting both wheels from a floor. Check up люфт each wheel. First of all shake a wheel in a vertical plane to check up that bearings of forward wheels are correctly adjusted. Then shake a wheel in a horizontal plane while the assistant checks люфт on connection of an intermediate shaft and a shaft of a gear wheel of steering transfer. If is present horizontal люфт wheels, check up a condition of spherical hinges of tips of steering draughts or their fastening to rotary fists. If in tips of steering draughts люфт is absent, means elements of a forward suspension bracket are worn out or is available considerable люфт between a gear wheel and rack a tooth gearing. For elimination of it люфта it is necessary to remove steering transfer from the car and to repair it.

Check of effort of turn of a steering wheel
PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Lift a forward part of the car. Establish jacks under the bottom levers of a forward suspension bracket as it is possible more close to wheels so that they did not interfere with turn of wheels
2. Turn a steering wheel from an emphasis against the stop at least 5 times that elements of a forward suspension bracket and a steering were established in a normal state. Establish forward wheels for rectilinear movement.
3. Hook on a dynamometer for a steering wheel spoke in a place the most remote from the wheel centre. With the forward wheels established for rectilinear movement, measure effort which is necessary for putting to a steering wheel for turn of wheels to the left and to the right.
4. The effort of turn of a steering wheel should be 5–20 Н at wheel turn on one complete revolution from the central position.
5. If the effort of turn of a steering wheel exceeds admissible values, check up a condition of elements of a forward suspension bracket and a steering, and also preliminary loading of steering transfer.
